In a dream i had last night, four rabbits made of glass were following me around. everywhere i went, they would be there too. they were at Dots sitting on the floor by my feet as i ate some fries and spent time with an old friend. they were in my car as i drove from one side of Portland to the other, and back again, on some important errand. they were at the home depot, the art supply store and even hopping around in the parking lot of of the 7-11 0n Powell and 82nd. ave. while i loaded up on a fountain drink.
from 7-11 we somehow ended up in the parking lot of Teresas work, waiting for her to get off for the day. the Bunnies were exploring the parking lot. hopping all over the hard pavement. thats when i noticed the sound. the dull, breakable sound of thick glass hitting concrete. with every landing the bunnies would crash down on the pavement and little fragments of glass would splinter off and explode out from under them. this concerned me. one of these hops would surely be the last as they landed and shattered into a million pieces.
so, as i waited for teresa, i decided to take a blanket from my trunk to soften the ground where the bunnies were jumping. but the bunnies would stay confined to the soft blanket. one would escape the safety of the soft landing pad, and as i would run to gather him up and bring him back, another would hop off as fast as it could. in a matter of minutes they were off the blanket, scattered to different corners of the parking lot.
clang and clack, clang and clack, every time they hopped across the pavement. then, to no surprise, i heard something shatter. i knew what it was. the bunnies stopped hopping and turned to look for the source of the sound. a scattering of glass laid over the concrete just to the right us. the bunnies began hopping slowly towards the glass shards. i rushed to scoop them up before one of them shattered into a pile of glass. but i was too late. one bunny jumped into the air and came down onto the parking lot floor and exploded on impact.
the other bunnies stopped dead in their tracks. startled by what they witnessed. this gave me just enough time to reach down with both hands and scoop up the last two rabbits. and as i brought them up towards my chest, one in each hand, i suddenly realized my mistake. before i could stop the adrenaline powered momentum of my arms, i heard that unmistakable noise of glass breaking.
glass exploded and shards flew out over the parking lot. pieces of bunny bounced off my car and broke into a million tiny slivers. my shirt and pants were covered in bunny glass. the hands that only wanted to keep these creatures safe, were now covered in shards of glass and bleeding from a thousand tiny cuts. what have i done, i thought to myself. i bent down to lay the bloody bunny shards onto my blanket and was startled by a noise. my eyes slowly opened to the sound of a beeping alarm and a grey, dreadful morning. the bunnies were never real. still, i felt sad for them all day....
